The Audi RS3 is the fastest car in the compact class
Running a lap in 7:40,748 minutes, the new Audi RS3 Sedan is the fastest compact model on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
In June, Frank Stippler broke the previous record in this class by 4.64 seconds. The decisive influence in obtaining the record is due to the new torque-splitter, which distributes the fully variable torque on the rear axle. In short: Vorsprung durch Technik.
“I am proud of the whole team. Everyone worked hard for this day, ”said Marvin Schwätter, Audi RS3 Project Manager, after the record time was displayed on the panel. “When we started the development work, we didn’t know when our compact sport would arrive on the Nordschleife,” he explained. “But during the endurance tests we realized that we would be able to reach very good times and that we would be able to set a new record.”
The record is based on the interaction of different cutting-edge technologies
This is the first time a torque-splitter has been used for an Audi model. It distributes torque completely variably between the rear wheels, thanks to the multi-disc coupling on each drive shaft. When driving dynamically, the torque-splitter amplifies the torque for the rear outer wheel, ie the wheel that is subjected to a lower load.
This means that when cornering there is a higher torque on the left rear wheel and on the right rear wheel respectively when cornering to the left. Thus, the RS3 has an optimized cornering trajectory and follows the cornering angle with greater precision.
The configuration is completed with Pirelli P Zero “Trofeo R” semi-slick tires. They are now offered for the first time as optional factory equipment. To these are added the 19-inch ceramic front brakes and Sport RS Plus suspensions with adaptive damper control.
